Letter From the President:

Dear Society Member,

As the old adage goes, if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. In the first days of March, I find myself contemplating that statement frequently. Whether it’s the unpredictable weather we’re experiencing across the US, the flurry of project deadlines, or the pressure of midterms, it’s comforting to know that respite is just a few weeks away.

Seeking out sources of motivation and inspiration can help ground you in the swirling mist of activity. Coincidentally, today is Dr. Seuss Day, celebrated on the birthday of the late, great author and illustrator. Even though Theodor Seuss Geisel’s notoriety and fame stemmed from being a children’s book author, his work has no shortage of ageless life and leadership lessons.

“You can't wait around for things to happen to you;
you have to go out and make your business dreams come true.”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh the Places You’ll Go!

A constant source for inspiration, “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” warns us of a dangerously hopeless place we want to avoid: the Waiting Place. Here, everyone’s waiting for either another chance, a better break or a new opportunity. But as leaders, we have to make our own opportunities and not wait for them to appear. It’s a valuable reminder that we must grab the bull by the horns and take action in making our own opportunities.

As you plunge into the second half of the semester and find your workload increasing, Dr. Seuss reminds us that no matter how busy we are, there’s no excuse to bury our heads in the sand:

“You can learn about SAD… And GLAD… And MAD!
There are so many things you can learn about.
BUT… You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”

As leaders, it’s important to not to have tunnel vision. We must be aware of what’s going on around us and with those who we lead.

“If you read with your eyes shut you’re likely to find
That the place where you’re going is far, far behind
SO… that’s why I tell you to keep your eyes wide.
Keep them wide open… at least on one side.”

-Dr. Seuss, I Can Read with My Eyes Shut

This month, I encourage you keep moving forward and be the inspirational driving force for yourself as well as those in your circle, despite the workload on your plate.

Best wishes,

Charles Knippen

6 Leadership Lessons from Dr. Seuss
By Brian Nichols

Today is the day that the legendary Dr. Seuss was born. Many images enter your head when someone mentions Dr. Seuss. You may think of your first book, “Green Eggs and Ham,” or even that pesky Grinch who stole Christmas. When I think about Dr. Seuss, I envision leadership lessons. Below you will find a series of quotes from the collective works of Dr. Seuss and a brief explanation of how each relates to leadership.
