Letter From the President:

Dear Society Member,

Happy Groundhog Day! Today our nation’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, was called upon for the 131st time to predict whether we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Like any leader, Phil has a job to do, and year after year he tells it like he sees without worrying about its interpretation. The lesson here is that regardless of the outcome, a strong leader must deliver their message with clarity and decisiveness.

On this day, I am also reminded of another Phil—Pittsburgh TV meteorologist Phil Connors, portrayed by Bill Murray in the film “Groundhog Day.” For those not familiar with the movie, Connors is assigned to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In the movie, he finds himself stuck in a time loop, repeating the same day over and over again. After living through many cycles of Groundhog Day, Phil eventually begins to reexamine his life, and resets his priorities.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”
― Albert Einstein

Over the years, “Groundhog Day" has evolved into a metaphor used to describe a repetitive, typically unfruitful, situation. The daily grind many of us face in school or at work is much like Connors’ experience in Groundhog Day. We continue doing the same old thing, sometimes expecting a different result. As leaders, we need to work proactively against repetitive cycles, especially those which do not produce the outcomes we desire.

The next time you are stuck in your own version of Groundhog Day and want to break the cycle, I encourage you to be creative and get energized when challenging your assumptions. Here are some tips to help you get started:

– Continually reexamine assumptions
– Focus on the positive benefits of the future rather than all the wrongs of the past
– Patience and determination are vital characteristics that you need in order to be an operative agent of change
– Read the 5 Leadership Lessons From Groundhog Day (The Film) for more

I hope you all are having a wonderful start to the spring semester.

Best wishes,

Charles Knippen

5 Leadership Lessons From Groundhog Day (The Film)
By Julie Benesh, PhD, MFA, SPHR

If you are wondering about this film’s relevance to leadership, consider that Phil Connors was a community leader by the end of the film, as well as a man who got what he wanted. In his example, we see that there are many ways to take in the environment and choices to be made around what to pay attention to and enact fulfillment of strategic and intimate needs. Leaders need to be proficient in flexing these, not so as to trick followers, as was Phil Connors’ early impulse, but to direct and support a quality experience of need fulfillment for all stakeholders.

Here are some specific leadership lessons from Groundhog Day:
