On Tuesday, October 6th, 2015, the Society kicked-off its Speaker Broadcast Series for the fall semester with America’s favorite weatherman, Al Roker.  The event took place at New Jersey City University and was streamed live to the Society’s 500 chapters across the country, but what most didn’t know, was that the event almost didn’t happen.
Mr. Roker had just returned home from South Carolina, where he was up all night covering the massive floods caused by Hurricane Joaquin.  Although physically exhausted and working on only a few hours of sleep, Mr. Roker treated Society members to an inspirational Q&A which focused on the leadership and heroism in the midst of disaster.

The event kicked off with a live poll, in which viewers were able to participate in by logging onto the Society’s Facebook page.
The poll asked:
What do you think is the best way to give to those in need after a disaster?
·        10% responded, “Donating Food”
·        1% said, “Donating Clothing”
·        10% answered, “Donating Money”
·        79% replied, “Donating My Time”
The above results were tallied throughout the event and shared with the audience following Mr. Roker’s stimulating speech. Society members also participated on Twitter by answering trivia questions submitting their own questions for Mr. Roker and quoting every last inspiring word he said.

Society members weren’t the only ones active on social media that night. Mr. Roker also shared his excitement leading up to and following the broadcast on Twitter and Instagram.
Members left the event feeling enlightened and inspired by Mr. Roker’s fresh perspectives and insights.
Congratulations to the New Jersey City University Society chapter for hosting this dynamic event.
